Dream Traveller: How to remember your dreams and begin to interpret them.

Many people believe that they never dream, but research shows that we all dream every night.  Dreams are very unique and personal to the person dreaming them.  As the Dreamer, you are the best person to interpret your own dreams, although sometimes getting a second opinion can be useful.

Firstly, before you can begin dream exploration it can be helpful to learn ways of remembering them.  Below are my top five tips on how to remember your dreams.  If you register, you can also receive a FREE copy of my e-Guide on How to Keep a Dream Diary.

  1. Remind yourself occasionally throughout the day that your dreams are helpful and that you’d like to remember them that night.  Set a reminder in your phone or put something in your calendar.

  1. Follow the ‘one hour rule’ and set yourself up for a good night’s sleep.  At least an hour before you go to bed, start to wind down; take a nice warm bath, listen to some calming music.  Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol before bedtime.

  1. Keep a pen and paper by your bed or a Dictaphone so that you have something to record your dreams when you wake up.  Write the date in the diary to remind yourself you’d like to remember your dreams.

  1. When you wake up, lie still and concentrate on all the images going through your mind and any elements of the dream you can remember.  Note also, how you’re feeling when you wake up.  Write the dream in the order of events as they appeared.

  1. Most of all don’t worry about it!  It’s okay if you don’t remember your dreams all the time; before long you should find you’re able to start recording some of them and exploring the messages within.

How to begin interpreting your dreams.

Here are some basic tips to help you begin the process of interpreting your own dreams.  As the Dreamer, you are the best person to decide ultimately what your dreams may mean.  Below are some ideas which may prove useful as you begin that part of the Journey.

1.       Make sure you have plenty of time available to give your dream your full attention.

2.       Look at your dream as if it is a story from beginning to end.  Anything that you remember, no matter how strange or seemingly trivial, is likely to be of significance because you remember it.  Read through what you have written in your dream diary, possibly even out loud as this may help add some dimension to it, that you had not previously considered.

3.       Your dream may have one of several different themes.  It may be literal, in that it is echoing daily concerns you may have about work or a relationship.  It may be offering you a message relating to an unresolved issue from your past.  Consider whether or not anything about your dream seems familiar, even if the content of the dream is rather obscure.

4.       Think in metaphors.  If, in your dream, there are waves crashing against the shore this can reflect waves of emotion which may be affecting you at this time.  Another example could be if a small animal is caged in a dream, you or someone you know (appearing as the animal in the dream) may be feeling trapped by a situation in your life.  You may be trying to reach a place in your dream where you notice the colour of the grass is bright green, a consideration perhaps that you may think that ‘life is greener on the other side’.  See what metaphors you can associate with in your dreams.

5.       Notice colours, the weather and any numbers that stand out in your dream.  These may offer additional information as to the dream’s meaning.  An example may be the number 2, which can represent union (such as a marriage) or a ‘coming together’ of ideas.  It can also represent the month of February, or the 2nd of the Month.  It could even be a door number.  Colours will be personal to you, so consider what you relate with the colour that appears.  For some people, the colour red will represent anger, for others love.  Consider what they may mean for you.

6.       Remember that Dreams – even graphic ones - are your friends, offering you a message to help you find your way.
